Shell Canada undertook an expansion of their oil sands operations both in Fort McMurray (Upstream) and the Edmonton area (Downstream) under the banner of Alberta Oil Sands Project (AOSP). The Downstream expansion included the construction of new facilities at their Scotford Upgrader, located at Scotford, which will produce 100,000 bbls of product per day. The Residue Hydro Conversion, Integrated Hydro Treatment Unit (RHC) is the main process unit within this expansion. PCL was contracted to complete the construction of this unit with a scope that included installation of underground piping, concrete foundations, structural steel, setting of mechanical equipment and modules, piping, instrumentation, electrical and electrical heat tracing.
Under a separate contract, PCL also fabricated and assembled approximately 155 modules (piperack, equipment, cable tray and structural steel modules) for the RHC unit.
